Sandridge School Band
We are very proud of our ever growing school band. We have approx. 35 members from Key Stage 2 playing on instruments including recorders, flute, clarinets , trumpet, xylophones, glockenspiels, keyboard and percussion, double bass and saxophone. All children are welcome to join us whatever their experience of playing an instrument – if they can use a beater they are in!!
The bands meet on Tuesday and Thursday lunch times and during the session we work on pieces for our forthcoming concerts. The pieces we have performed in the past include In Dulce Jubilo, Arrival by Mike Oldfield, Vivaldi’s |Spring, Annie’s Song and Kalyinka. A concert in the local church at Christmas and in the school in Easter celebrates the work done in Band and Choir all term and shows an amazing standard for children so young.
The band members love the collaborative element and are incredibly supportive of each other:
‘I love working together with friends to make music. I’ve learnt new notes and some of the older children have helped me. I practice every day.’
Isabella -Year 5
Children within the band make rapid progress in the reading and performing of music:
‘This is my second year in Band. I like learning a new skill. We practise a little bit at a time and I improve. I am always surprised by the sound at the end. I really do like us all playing together’
The confidence, determination and excitement of our band members is a pleasure to see and share. They are an important part of school life and regularly perform in assemblies and school events such as fairs. They reach incredible standards but most importantly enjoy making music together. For many children this is a new experience and not one they had ever even considered!
