At Sandridge School our aim is to provide a music curriculum that will enable each child to reach their full potential in music.
To ensure a consistent approach we use the Kapow Primary Music scheme which provides a holistic approach to music, in which the individual strands below are woven together to create engaging and enriching learning experiences:
- Performing
- Listening
- Composing
- The history of music
- The inter-related dimensions of music
In each lesson, pupils will actively participate in musical activities drawn from a range of styles and traditions, developing their musical skills and their understanding of how music works. Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies from independent tasks, paired and group work as well as improvisation and teacher-led performances.
Lessons are ‘hands-on’ and incorporate movement and dance elements, as well as making cross curricular links with other areas of learning.
We aim to not only equip children with musical skills but also allow them to develop personal skills such as confidence, self-esteem, leadership, team working, concentration, listening and problem-solving skills.
Early Years Foundation Stage pupils investigate music through songs and classroom instruments and are provided with opportunities to access creative arts through play on a daily basis.
Music extra-curricular activity is highly valued and promoted at Sandridge. Our purpose-built music studio means these activities are focused and uninterrupted.
Children are given the opportunity to learn an instrument with peripatetic lessons provided by the Hertfordshire Music Service in our music studio. We currently have children learning a range of instruments including percussion, woodwind (flute, dood & clarinet), piano/keyboard, strings (violin, guitar & ukulele).
We have a KS2 choir which meet once a week. Since, it restarted in 2021, the choir has performed at the O2 as part of the Young Voices – for the last two years and are looking forward to attending again in 2024. We have also performed in the local community as well as enhancing many school events.
